The uprights just slot into the slots on the base. 
The Crafty Mate is made from 2 sheets of 3mm acrylic bonded together making it rigid.
The grooves are only cut out on the top sheet of acrylic so when cutting you are cutting on the bottom sheet between top sheet grooves.
This eliminates having to put anything underneath when cutting.
